The JNR steam locomotive D51, affectionately known as "Degoichi," was introduced in 1935 and is one of Japan's most representative steam locomotives, with 1,115 units manufactured, the highest number in Japan. As a steam locomotive well suited to Japan's railways, it was used extensively on both main and sub-main lines, for both passenger and freight trains.
The leading and trailing wheels are now spoke wheels, giving the undercarriage a firmer feel.
